Getting Treated for Damaged Skin after a Stint of Radiation

by | Jan 21, 2013 | Health

The loss of muscle mass and weight loss is seen often in people who are getting treatment for cancer. In addition to getting protein to prevent this, they also need to eat a lot of vegetables and fruit such as berries, broccoli, carrots and citrus fruits. Vitamin C is great for people who are going through radiation treatments, and citrus fruits are loaded with this essential vitamin. People sometimes have a loss of appetite if they are getting treatment, so it may be best to consult a dietician so they can help figure out the best diet plan for the person’s body type, height and personal needs. Eggs, meat and raw fish should be avoided by all cancer patients whether they are receiving cancer treatment via radiation or not. Since difficulty swallowing is a side effect of radiation treatments, people may have a hard time eating to get the nutrients that they need. They can try milkshakes, mashed potatoes and other soft foods to replace things that they should be eating. Fruit smoothies are a terrific way to get their fruit intake if they have trouble eating.

Being Prepared for Side Effects in Advance

Damaged skin is unfortunately a major consequence of radiation therapy. If you will be going through the radiation process, then you will want to be well prepared. Have treatments for radiation on hand. These could include lotions, foam cleansers, moisturizers, emulsifiers and other items that your doctor may recommend. Skin irritation is one side effect that patients can take care of themselves, and they need to really stay on top of it to ensure that they stay as healthy as possible throughout the radiation treatment phase.

Hygiene While Going Through Radiation Treatments

While you are going through radiation treatments you will obviously have to stay clean to have good hygiene and to prevent infection, but you will have to be much more careful than what a healthy person would. When you are bathing, stay away from any soap that contains harmful chemicals, perfumes, dyes or anything else that could worsen skin conditions. Radiation treatments are notorious for causing skin irritation with people, and you want to prevent this as much as you possibly can. You will also have to shower or bathe in water that is only lukewarm. Extremely hot or cold water can worsen skin conditions as well. You can wash your skin, but it is best to just gently pat the cleanser on your skin rather than rubbing it. This will allow you to get clean while not further damaging your skin. There are lotions you can get to put on after you bathe that will keep the affected area of skin moist and hydrated.

DermaRad Relief is one of many treatments for radiation therapy. It can be used combined with other products for ultimate results.
