It is estimated approximately 85% -98% of all girls and women will have some cellulite on their body. Cellulite, the dimpling and rippling of the skin on the thighs, buttocks, stomach and on the arms can occur in men as well. However, it is far more common in females, often developing very quickly after puberty. It is one of the biggest body image issues women have, leading to a whole industry in developing ineffective and costly cellulite treatment options.
The mistaken belief is that cellulite is the same as any other type of body fat and can be controlled by exercise and dieting. This information is simply not true as many very fit girls and women have cellulite, especially on the buttocks and thighs.
The Reasons for Cellulite
There is no one reason for cellulite but many researchers believe it is a combination of genetics, metabolism, excessive dieting, hormones and possible issues with the small blood vessels carrying blood to and from the surface of the skin.
The dimpling and rippling of the surface of the skin occurs when fat cells push up and against the bands of connective tissue in the skin. These bands and the protruding fat cells change the pressure on the visible layer of skin, creating the “orange peel” appearance.
Why Most Cellulite Treatment Products Fail
Virtually any lotion, cream or gel rubbed on the skin has no effect as a cellulite treatment. What it may do is remove fluid from the skin’s surface and narrow blood vessels, which reduces the size of the fat cells through loss of water.
Other cellulite treatment products may recommend diets and herbal supplements, most of which also restrict blood flow to the skin’s surface by narrowing blood vessels. They may also be mild diuretics, reducing the water in the fat cells and giving a slightly less noticeable effect to the skin.
The Real Alternative
There is an effective cellulite treatment available through your cosmetic surgeon. It is known as Cellulaze and uses a laser to cut the restrictive bands under the surface of the skin to create a flat surface.
The laser also provides focused heat to the fatty cells under the connective bands and melts this fatty tissue. Through a gentle massage of the area, this fat is expelled out of the body, reducing the presence of fatty tissue in the area.
While not permanent, Cellulaze is a longer lasting cellulite treatment. Most patients, with weight management and exercise, will see results for a year or more, and then the procedure can be repeated as needed.
We offer Cellulaze as a highly effective cellulite treatment. To learn more about the Chicago Cosmetic Institute and our services visit us.
