Tooth Extraction: Causes, Procedure and Aftercare

by | Mar 9, 2018 | Dental Health, Dentist

Tooth extractions are one of the most dreaded procedures in the entire dentistry field. This is because patients assume the process is going to be extremely painful. The fact is, however, that in most cases, this procedure is fairly common for dentists, and doesn’t cause more than minor discomfort, thanks to the procedures that are used today. Learning more about the tooth extraction process is the best way to be prepared for what’s going to happen.

Why Tooth Extraction May be Needed?

There is myriad of reasons that your dentist may suggest a tooth extraction procedure. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Excessive tooth decay

  • Teeth mobility due to the loss of bone around the affected tooth

  • Teeth that are deciduous and have been retained that prevent the ability for permanent teeth to erupt

  • Healthy tooth extraction for orthodontic treatment

  • Impacted teeth

How is a Tooth Extraction Done?

The tooth extraction process will usually take between five and 30 minutes. The first step is to administer the anesthesia, which will help to desensitize the tooth. Then an elevator is used to severe the fibers that hold your tooth in the socket. Once the fibers are unattached, forceps are used to remove the tooth.

Aftercare

Swelling may occur after a tooth is extracted, but everything is healed within a few days. Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions about how to care for the site of the extraction to ensure no issues arise. In some cases, if the tooth was infected, the dentist may prescribe you some antibiotics, but this is determined on a case by case basis.

If you believe you may need a tooth extraction, make sure to speak with your dentist. They can help you know what type of treatment is right for you.
